The Allatoona Falls Trail leads you to a breathtaking cascading waterfall, Allatoona Falls. While it is commonly known as Allatoona Falls, it is also called Toonigh Creek Falls or Hause Shoal.
Location: Olde Rope Mill Park, Woodstock, GA
Type: Out-and-back
Length: Approximately 3.5 Miles
While it is rated as an easy trail, there are a few places that are more challenging, requiring balance to cross waterways using rocks and walking to the main trail along the of a hill. Overall, it is not a challenging trail.
You will start out at the Old Rope Mill Park, turning to your left as you enter the park. The trail here is a wide dirt trail, shared by hikers and mountain bikers. Walk over the bridge and continue to follow the path. The trail is blazed with orange markers. These markers they can be hard to spot, so it’s helpful to keep your AllTrails map open.
You will walk along the water for part of time, seeing kayaks and canoes enjoying the water and passing old mining equipment. About halfway there, you will need to cross over a small stream. Even if it hasn’t rained recently, this area can be very muddy. If you continue uphill, it is easier to cross this stream, as there is a small rock “bridge” there. However, you will to go back to the main path which requires you use your balance to walk almost sideways for about 100 yards. This is the hardest part of the trail and should not hinder you from tackling it, the view will be worth it.
As you approach the waterfall, you will hear the sounds of the water cascading of the rocks. If it hasn’t rained recently, the water will be lower, allowing you to walk out onto them, getting a closer view of the falls.
After you’ve had the chance to sit and enjoy the beauty of the falls, make your way back to the main park using the same trail.
Sturdy shoes are a must, especially for the second half of the trail. Some of the land around the falls is private property, so be sure to stay on the trails!
